They forgot Numonyx is a non vertically integrated competitor, the biggest one last Q. They're refering to Samsung/Tosh with much lower share, and Numonyx will shrink before Spansion will.

BTW isn't a bit contradictory to have extra price pressure and at the same time get robust margin improvements?

I can see where they come from: It's risky. Spansion depends too much on competitors not starting price wars, and Samsung might do just that (although I've betted against it). The comment you quoted is a bit contradictory though. Thanks for the quote all the same.

Keith just posted Oppenheimer comments too: Expected margin gains are already priced in. More from Oppenheimer:

Rec-Initiate story about MU, CHS, LCUT, ESL, WOR, SPSN
MOST NOTEWORTHY: Micron (MU), Chico's FAS (CHS) and Lifetime Brands (LCUT) were today's noteworthy initiations: Oppenheimer assumed Micron with an Outperform rating and $9.50 target, as they believe price declines in the DRAM market moderated in 2H of the December quarter and that concerns of oversupply are already priced into shares. Stanford believes shares of Chico's FAS will remain under pressure over the next three to six months given the adverse economic conditions and the company's "less-than-exciting" fashion assortment. The firm started shares with a Hold rating and $10 target. Lifetime Brands was initiated with a Neutral rating at SunTrust. The firm prefers to wait for greater visibility on the U.S. consumer spending environment before becoming more constructive on the name...OTHER INITIATIONS: Soleil initiated Worthington (WOR) with a Hold rating. Jefferies started Esterline Technologies (ESL) with a Buy rating and $58 target. Oppenheimer assumed Spansion (SPSN) with a Perform rating.

Analyst comments are really a lot more sober / down to earth wrt Spansion than they used to be.
