The roughly one billion newly minted middle class people in China and India combined will need to travel often to the Stuff Mart. Manufacturers will require raw materials to fill the shelves at the Stuff Mart.

While petrochemicals extracted through wells can replace a high percentage of what previously required mined goods, it cannot replace all yet. China has a huge natural resource base of sand, and if they discover how to manufacture silicon based stuff, they may not place such a large demand on mined resources.

We can hope that these new consumers will not be instantly Madame Blueberryized, but that is a creeping affliction.

Obviously picking moments in time may not reflect trends; this may have been the reason that a second bet was never negotiated.
