More than 73,000,000 people are below the poverty level.

If that's true it says something about the poverty level. You don't have 73 million Americans who are truly poor. It seems anything less than a solid middle class existence is being defined as poverty level.

Hmm it seems like it isn't true. The official stat is that 12% are below the poverty line. That's 36 or 37 million people not 73, you doubled it.

Population below poverty line:
12% (2004 est.)

Going directly to the census bureau (since you claim it as the source.

# The official poverty rate in 2006 was 12.3 percent, down from 12.6 percent in 2005 (Table 3).

# In 2006, 36.5 million people were in poverty, not statistically different from 2005.

Your PDF link gives the same data, and confirms that you are doubling the number.

Would you like to insure a family of 4 on a 50,000 income?

The figure was for people with above $50k income, sure that can include $50,001 but most of the group have more than that. Also many of them don't have a family of four. But even with $50k and a family of four you should be able to buy insurance if you manage your money well and don't live in a very expensive area.
