First of all, I think most Americans sympathize with the Israelis in their conflict

I think most Americans could care less. Most Americans care about their kid's schools, the price of gas, their rent, their jobs and what to have for dinner. Conflicts between other people on the other side of the planet are not something your average American cares about.

The only caveat is that the peace settlement should not be a suicide pact.
Have you asked yourself why? Or you believe only what you hear on the news.
Look at Gaza - give them land and what do you get - missles.
Hmm, you appear to be an intelligent person, how do you give the land back when the land was stolen in the first place? So they gave it back, yet they controlled every aspect of people's lives. They turned Gaza into a modern concentration camp.

Leave Lebanon and what do they get - missiles and provocations.
Why were they in Lebanon in the first place? You hear what they want you to hear and you see what they want you to see. And no they did not leave by their own free will, they were kick out. The Israeli toll was, if I recall an average of 25 to 30 soldiers a week.

Look at it this way - Israel is a reality. Until the Palestinians accept that fact they will continue to suffer - and the world with it. When they truly accept that reality the nature of a settlement will emerge. Until then - the conflict will continue.
No one is denying Israel, yet there were never any concessions on the part of the Israelis. Need I list the Palestinian grievances? You are an intelligent person, you can look at the issue objectively.

I believe Golda Meir had it right when she said something like "until the Palestinians love their children more than they hate Israel there will be no peace".
That is rich coming from her. She refused to allow Jews to seek refuge in England, she preferred to have the ships sank with all the Jews with it, than to go to England.

Until that time I am a supporter of Israel.
With out your support, in treasure and blood, Israel would be long gone.

Now don't bug me with all the subset questions that that implies.
You do not have to answer them.

re lebanon ...an explanation of the lebanese civil war is vital to put todays problems in context.

one could start here...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebanese_civil_war

there is also a link to an explanation of Black September...

"September 1970 is known as the Black September in Arab history and sometimes is referred to as the "era of regrettable events." It was a month when Hashemite King Hussein of Jordan moved to quash an attempt by Palestinian organizations to overthrow his monarchy. The violence resulted in the killing of 7,000 to 8,000 from both sides.[1] Armed conflict lasted until July 1971 with the expulsion of the PLO and thousands of Palestinians to Lebanon."
