Religion is very simple. Say you are not a member of an organized religion, and you aren't, voila. First, that's not true. What happens to a Muslim in Dubai who declares he isn't a Muslim? Either he is ignored or he becomes liable for the crime of apostasy. Second, Jewish is not a religion as you keep insisting in a simple-minded way. It's an ethnic identity with an attached religion. That's why you can be a Jewish atheist. It is not so simple to disown your ethnic identity, which your mother certainly has a lot to do with. Ask anybody who was born African-American but decided to 'pass' for white.

it sounds like you are dealing with identity in part based on religion and in part base on race .......with no clear separation. perhaps you and nadine need to define what you mean better. ie one can stop being jewish in a religious or cultural way but you cant stop being jewish in a genetic way....but of corse that implies that if your mum is a jewish convert she became jewish genetically which aint so.... but we can pretend it to be. but the millions of jewish maternal decent who dont practice being jewish are still jewish ...yet only geneticly. its all so confusing and a bit pointless unless you live in a country with a state sponsored religion. i would like somebody to correct this explaination in a clear legalistic way based on sound genetic science
