First, a tip of the hat to Basil for reminding one and all that this is not Presidents Day. This is the day we celebrate George Washington’s birthday. Second, Gallup has a poll of who modern Americans think is the best president. Ever. The list is further proof that modern Americans are idiots. Hat tip: Hot Air. Third, let’s get this nonsense about the Best Ex-President over with. It is not the peanut farmer, who will embrace any dictator provided he is anti-American. That honor goes to John Quincy Adams, who left the White House, joined the House of Representatives and made legal history at age 74 with the Amistad case. He had last appeared before the Supreme Court some 37 years prior. Fourth and finally, I set the record straight. These are the best presidents. 5. FDR. His socialist policies extended the Depression but his stoic leadership in World War II redeemed him. It was the only war in American history to have the support of just about all the people — for 4 long years. 4. Ronald Reagan. He restored American pride, shook off the stagflation of the 70s and he stared down the Soviet Union. 3. James Polk. Manifest Destiny is derided in textbooks, but in a single term he annexed Texas, purchased California and settled the dispute over the Canadian border in what was called the Oregon Territory. It is difficult to imagine Mexico turning that vast wasteland into productive land. 2. Abraham Lincoln. He sacrificed his life to the simple principle: “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” 1. George Washington. He set the tone. He did not rule. He served. 2 terms. Then he retired, finally, to Mount Vernon. Nothing was accomplished except the ratification of the Bill of Rights, the establishment of the republic and the planning of the capital. Linked by Memeorandum
