Also if the idea is to insure against risk it makes sense to have a fairly high deductible. The health care cost situation would be better if most people had high deductible policies.

If a family of four making $40K has a, say $4k deductible then it is pretty much worthless insurance unless there is a major illness. Most decent employee provided programs have a very low (if anything) deductible and small co-payments.

Sometimes we get too generic when talking about insurance on this thread. Insurance is like weather... it was in the mid 70's here in FL today; in Chicago it's 16 degrees. Both are weather but very different.
