Oh, I realize that. You don't need to go to a gun dealer to buy a gun. I suspect most gun purchases are private sales between individuals.

There is very solid reasoning behind the concept of privacy concerning medical issues - if you can't see that then your a moron.

I suppose you think anyone who has taken a mild anti-depressant for a period of time should be shunned and tarred and feathered and ridden out of town. The only trouble with that concept is it would involve tens of millions of people. You wouldn't have enough tar or feathers.

Whatever. I keep hearing liberals say we need to keep guns out of the hands of people with mental histories, on meds, etc so legislation is needed for this - but they never deal with the fact that such folks have rights to secrecy, confidentiality (and that it is liberal rights groups like the ACLU which have had a big hand in making that so).

BTW I don't see why informing a govt agency about mental illness episodes (which I'm indifferent to) would equal "running them out of town on a rail".

I find it useless that the fact this Illinois guy may have stopped taking a medication is getting more press that the fact he was also a great supporter of "gun rights".

I haven't seen that. I have seen that he as a peace and social justice progressive type and those folks usually aren't gun rights folks.

What type of gun rights would you like to take away from the public anyway? You don't seem to want to take gun rights away from the mentally ill.
