Yes, they are both theories, and there is not great evidence. My comment was off-hand regarding a recent paper, but I lack the link. The paper was offering some evidence that Sunspot observations in the Maunder Minimum might have been the result of upper atmosphere haze from volcano's. It is very tentative I would say.

One would expect correlations with other evidence to support this.
