The safest way to invest in a deflationary spiral is simply cash. Cash typically will outperform everything else in that kind of environment. That's because virtually everything else will go down in price while cash remains stable. At that point, the most important consideration would be the type of cash (US Dollar, foreign currencies or Gold/Silver). Betting on a depression is a low probability play.

I think the market sent a very strong warning of inflation ahead last week, but few were willing to listen:
