We could lose our American way and standard of life.

A rudder could well steer us away from our American way and standard of life.

"What scares me is I'm not sure we have anyone that can save us from the possibility of a global economic downturn that could be the most serious since the depression."

The porous borders have kept us from a depression so far. Presumably a few million more illegal immigrants will continue to stave off depression in the US. Countries that depended on US exports have already started finding other customers. In many cases our trading partners have begun trading with each other.

It may seem glib, but I am totally serious when I say we need to look for people who will do less damage rather than someone to screw things up rather than letting the markets solve problems. Markets solve problems that people could never fathom a solution for. Individual people looking to benefit from a perceived market anomaly combine to solve huge problems. Socialism is not going to get it half as right as Capitalists; and Socialism is at least twice as expensive even after factoring in unconscionable profits for each capitalist.
