WRT standards and new 'net applications and platforms, further research has tended to confirm the view that standards compliance is helpful, and non-compliance is to be avoided, as far as possible.

My position is that new entrants to virgin territory (e.g. the Internet) are still governed by standards, at the network and transport level.

At the non-physical level, to ignore standards is perilous for new entrants.

So standards are functional at two different levels.

Perhaps our common understanding could be assisted by an example or two: cases where Internet applications have recently become successful without standards compliance.
