Would you not think the use of skins or clothing was equally important for warmth? I don't think people walked around caring a fire bottle or something to stay warm.

I do think fire was pretty important, and especially as humans moved out of Africa, but the move out of Africa is not that old, at least not for the modern human line.

There are quite a number of things which most likely are linked to human evolution (intelligence, language, Ag, fire, etc) but it is not easy figuring out exactly what changes in our genes are attributed to what.
