Of course. What a scam. I'll give you $600 so you don't notice the entitlement mess, or the security mess, or the drug mess, or the education mess, or the mortgage mess, or the oil mess, or the dollar mess, or the policeman to the world mess.

Then I'll take $1000 from you, because government has to be paid for. $630 goes to pay the debt we incurred on your behalf when we sent you that check, plus interest. $170 goes to cover those not as fortunate as you in life's lottery. $170 goes to all the good people who have to administer this socially valuable and worthwhile endeavor. As an aside, this is a sort of welfare, and may even be needed in that make work is better than no work, I'm not sure.

And the last $30 is what I skim off the top so that I can attend important conferences in Bali. And you should be happy I'm only taking that. If I was really greedy I'd go get a consulting job with one of the Washington firms and do collusive deals with my replacements. That's a stage in life I will get to if the allure and trappings of power grow old or are taken away. Not too bad a consolation prize.

Anyway, some fundamental link to reality in the public discourse has disappeared. I first became glaringly aware of it when presented with "That depends on what the meaning of is is", and there was much careful thought and discussion. I felt like I was suddenly a Lilliputian. It ain't getting better.
