I will write to the Mayor to suggest they build a mountain right downtown just in case they want those facilities .... no wait, they have already done that. There is already a mountain of recycled material right there in downtown Wellington with a cable car up it, pub, botanical gardens etc. You see, such a mountain IS an excellent idea. But waiting for nature to recycle sedimentary deposits into a mountain would involve a VERY long wait. London, England, for example, and Paris, are quite flat with only gentle rises. They have built little lookouts so people can go up the Eiffel Tower and The London Eye londoneye.com to get a look around. Primrose Hill is a little example of what could be done. London is subject to flooding in storms and tsunamis, so the mountain could be built right around London in a large ring, say just outside the M25. Existing roads could be made into tunnels under the mountain by putting a roof over them, then filling over the top. Hey presto, no more flooding from even very large tsunamis [such as would occur if the Canary Islands collapse happens, or a bolide lands in the Atlantic Ocean. It would be a useful fortification against invading Romans, Germans, French, Spanish and Danes. Barbary pirates would have to be barbaric elsewhere. Such a project would be huge so rubbish could be imported from other cities which already have reasonable hills, such as in Switzerland, Vancouver [with the Arctic melted, shipping would be easier], Los Angeles, Lima. Airports could be built on top of it and that would mean less fuel needed to climb to cruising altitude. It would be a great paragliding facility. During construction large pipes could be laid which could be housing for umpty million people. It would be very quiet - no more constant noise from neighbours, vehicles, helicopters, police ambulance and fire sirens, barking dogs etc. It would be an excellent shelter against nuclear bomb attacks, bolide impacts and sun explosions. Living rooms could be at the surface, for great views. Roads with automated vehicles would run around it. It would become a whole, huge, city. Mqurice
