No, it says the sources said the relationship had become romantic. Don't edit out and censor like the rightwing always does. And if you think the NY Times would lie about something like this, you're crazy. They have the highest journalistic standards in the world.

Also, there might be a lot more to this story. This may just be the edited version.

If the tabloids or Drudge released this though I would agree with you.
