The NYT endorsed McCain. At the time of their endorsement, they were aware of this story. But they could not verify it because no one stepped forward. Now, I believe the conservative publications are coming forward with witnesses (not sure how true they are). They are producing these witnesses for NYT and are pressuring them to go after the story.

My read is that between now and the convention, if they can bring him down, then the conservatives can come up with their own nominee at the convention and turn McCain's delegates around.

The Republicans, conservatives and neocons are in disarray like we have never seen before.

I haven't followed this story as closely as some others have but the only reason I can see for holding the story is because they are not sure of their facts and/or sources and need to check them out further. If they held back because of the primary race, then I think they are out of line.

Regarding the McCain story, I'm curious what people's opinions are.

Was it responsible of the Times to hold it back until McCain had effectively won the nomination, or should they have given voters the chance to evaluate the story ?

Or should they have buried the story altogether ?
