The ad, simply titled “Night Shift,” is playing in Ohio, a state that’s fallen on some hard economic times lately and whose middle class, blue-collar voters make up a large part of Mrs. Clinton’s base. It begins by showing a waitress collecting menus under the fluorescent lights of a desolate diner. We see a young woman sweeping up globs of hair after the closing hour at a salon. Then there’s a nurse patrolling a hospital corridor, poring over the charts of sleeping patients. These people are among the hard-working Americans who diligently do their jobs night in and night out for little acknowledgment or appreciation. They’re “often overworked, underpaid and sometimes overlooked,” the ad says, but not by Mrs. Clinton. She says she’ll make their daily lives a little bit easier by providing for health care, child care and elder care. “She understands,” the announcer says, because “she’s worked the night shift too.” Jay Carson, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, told The Caucus that line does not refer to any hourly paid job Mrs. Clinton has held. Instead, it’s a “rhetorical reference” to her long nights as a lawyer, First Lady and now as a senator. “She is certainly known for her work ethic,” he said. Here’s the full script for “Night Shift”: Announcer: You pour coffee, fix hair, you work the night shift at the local hospital. You’re often overworked, underpaid and sometimes overlooked. But not by everyone. One candidate has put forth an American family agenda to make things easier for everyone who works so hard. Universal health care. Increased daycare. And help with elder health care. She understands. She’s worked the night shift too. Mrs. Clinton: I’m Hillary Clinton and I approved this message
