Privatization of profit, socialization of loss.

I think that's a fair statement.

But I also believe that such a fundamental underpinning of the economy should be protected from Keynesian "Animal Spirits".

After all, isn't the primary worry of the municipality financial officers that RE prices will decline so dramatically that it assessed property taxes will also decline, leaving the local governments in dire fiscal straights?

The politicians have a vested interest in maintaining the level of services local governments provide (and that the local electorate foolishly chose them to provide).

Should they be forced to cut those services, guess who gets kicked out of office in the next election?
