Getting it right is not easy.

Exteme measures from either side is dangerous.

There are models out there that seem to work.

We should take a closer look at the Scandinavian model. Those are real world models. They are not perfect, but it is a lot better than any others.

I think you have hit the nail on the head so hard you hit it out of the park. (Bizarrely appropriate mixed metaphore.)

The statists have been creeping towards socialism for so long they don't see the problem in making another big leap. They don't perceive that we are not tottering on the brink of the tipping point that would destroy the nobel experiment that has become this great nation. When 49% of the people are not paying income taxes they think "whats a percent or two between sworn enemies?"

OTOH you and I correctly perceive that the pendulum has to swing back toward personal freedom and responsibility before we can risk adding more dead weight on the system. When one lacks the perspective of history back to and beyond the founding of this nation, it is easy to reflect in terms of one's lifetime to derive what made this country great. For many yuppie liberals that is Sex Drug & Rock n' Roll plus a few decades after for boring work.

When one has ancestors that chose to leave their ancestral land rather than lose freedom of religion or face death it is easier to realize that this country is unique in history and to lose it to socialists would be a slap in the face of all of our ancestors who sacrificed for it. When our families shed blood for the freedoms others take for granted, it is harder to swallow the desire for us to become nannies for those who lack personal motivation.
