I would like to know why short interest on the NYSE and other exchanges remains at, or near, all time highs?

Short selling to hedge has many applications outside the speculative profit-making motive. For example, to hedge convertibles or whatever (I'm not an expert). I think global statistics on short interest are so heavily distorted by hedging in the classic sense (i.e. to reduce risk rather than make money) that they are probably not a good guide to the speculative component.
