Once again, we go back to Brad Cooke, the founder of Endeavour Silver for some thoughts on both Canplats and mining in Mexico which seems to be one of the few friendly environments to be exploring these days: “As mentioned yesterday, I think the current major disconnect between precious metal prices and precious metal equities could be a historic opportunity to purchase junior gold and silver shares. However, I should caution that the precious metal prices have been on a roll of late so they do appear overdue for a pullback before pushing ahead. Once that short-term metals correction is over, I think the stocks should out-perform the metals. Two precious metal stocks in my portfolio that I think have the potential to reach double-digits are Canplats Resources (who released more drill news yesterday, currently $3.67 per share) and Endeavour Silver (warning - I am an insider, currently $4.02 per share). In November, Canplats announced a significant new discovery on their Camino Rojo property in Mexico. It appears to be a precious-metal rich, polymetallic breccia possibly related to buried intrusions. Given that this new discovery is located only 50 km from the huge Penasquito mine (17.8 million oz Au, 1.3 billion oz Ag) now under construction by Goldcorp, and bears several geologic similarities to it, I think the discovery still has a lot of upside potential. Canplats has the money and the drills to generate news almost monthly throughout 2008, so even though it is still early in the discovery cycle and the investment risk is still high, the potential returns easily justify owning the shares at this time. Endeavour Silver is at the other end of the gold and silver stock spectrum. We founded the Company and went looking to acquire key silver assets in 2003, in anticipation of a coming silver market. We did not have to wait long, as the silver price finally started to move in late 2003, just as we were negotiating to acquire a fully built and permitted silver mine in Mexico that was about to close. As it turned out, within 6 months of acquiring the “Guanacevi Mines Project” in 2004, Endeavour successfully discovered new high-grade silver mineralization in the new North Porvenir zone, drove a 400 m access ramp into it, estimated an initial 4.8 million oz inferred silver resource, and commenced production. Fast forward to today and EDR has grown its silver resources 9 fold and silver production 6 fold in barely 4 years! Endeavour believes it now has an opportunity to expand resources and production an additional 2.5 fold to 5 million oz silver production per year, just to fill the existing capacity of its two plants. The Company can capture additional growth by acquiring and drilling exploration properties located near our 3 operating projects such as the recently announced Milache, San Pedro and Navegantes projects. Given EDR currently has over $25 million in working capital, healthy growing cash flow, and only 49 million shares issued, we view our downside risk as manageable and our upside potential as a multiple of the current share price (assuming the silver price doesn’t tank and other risk factors remain normal). Buyer beware, and let’s hope these markets follow my lead!” ***************************** For the types that are prone to being bad guys, crooks and the like, instead of robbing the corner liquor store or doing something dastardly such as that, maybe you should go into white collar crime that apparently pays off much better. We looked at some of the dealings on Wall Street over the last while and that might be an example. But as far as David Baldacci’s book, Total Control, which was actually printed 10 years ago, he comes up with an interesting thought. If you are looking to make some serious money, why don’t you find a way to black mail, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve? After all, if you know what he’s going to do next month or next year and surprise the market with a 100 point interest rate cut or a 50 point increase, can you imagine the billions if not tens of billions that could be made on the market knowing what he would be doing next? It’s a heavy book of 690 pages and we can’t say that the dialogue is the type we would use every day and there is just an awful lot of coincidence in the book, but heck, if you finish a 690 page book in two days, maybe there was something to it.
