Which you said were common sense.< I never said such a thing. I said that if people used statistics, observation of the results of various life styles and life choices, common sense etc... they could answer many questions about morality without religion but that the two would typically lead people to the same conclusion. I never said the country should be run that way though. I'm a libertarian. I think people should be allowed to do a broad range of things I would consider immoral or inferior (myself included). However, I see absolutely nothing wrong with defining and encouraging superior behavior and life choices. Point being that when religious conservatives use "the Bible" etc... to make their points, they run into a lot of resistance because people don't want religion dictated to them. In addition, those that tend to defend against that kind of religious aggressiveness get so caught up in being anti-religion, they practically wind up encouraging poor and inferior behavior that hurts society as a whole. They lose track of the fact that a behavior can be demonstrably inferior without reaching that conclusion via religion. All that said, I also think there are still some behaviors and life choices that are tough to evaluate. Reasonable people can disagree. However, I think there usually IS an intrinsic answer. We just haven't all figured some of them out yet. For example, IMO, the world will eventually figure out that abortion is intrinsically immoral even if there are no Christians left in the world at the time. However, I don't think it should be outlawed until most people figure that out on their own and/or because of the efforts of people that already understand it.
