re: ""Obama's already got the "we want out of Iraq" votes.""

Only from the Dems in the primaries

We do seem to be talking past one another. Obama already has all the anti-Iraq war votes, independent, Rep, and Dem, assuming McCain is the Rep nominee. They have no where else to go. At least the set for whom it's their primary reason for voting.

One could make a different argument, however. And that's the one that says Obama picks up some votes for being willing to step across the aisle to pick a vp candidate. There might be a few centrists who are choosing between Obama and McCain on those grounds.

But I don't see that as necessary. McCain is going to have to go to his right to get the base out to vote in the general. Obama then gets all the "get out of Iraq now" voters.

Obama needs to move to the center and needs an attractive candidate. But that candidate needs to be acceptable, at least as some minimal level, to the Dems. Hagel won't make the cut on that one.

But his foreign policy views and experience make him a natural for the cabinet. And, since he's retiring, he's available.
