Today, more than half of ETFs in the US are held by retail investors.

Most ETFs have a lower expense ratio than comparable mutual funds.

iShares S&P SmallCap 600 Value Index looks like a perfectly
good choice. Would only cost on the order of $100 in
commissions to move into it, say, 10% at a time over the
rest of the year. I like that idea. Over the past year,
dorking around with biotechs in my kid's accounts resulted
in something like a 50% loss, no thanks to Tgen, Gene Logic,
and Anadys!! Those three swallowed up a good 2% of our
net worth, but all the losses fell into the kid's accounts,
whoops. I am bound to do better with this idea for the wife.

Pacific Investment Management Co. bond-fund manager Bill Gross, a Treasury bear, said inflation could keep the Federal Reserve from pushing short-term interest rates much lower. He also thinks the stalling economy could lead to a big increase in government spending, something bond investors wouldn't like to see, because it would mean a surge of supply in Treasurys.
