Well, that's my point. Any money or credit available from shorting GLD may be going into things quite remote from the gold market. Maybe ten-year Treasuries.

But the short positions do have to be closed or at least covered sooner or later, and it could be ruinous to those holding the positions.

And simultaneously ruinous to people leveraged long in Treasuries.

And doubly so for those in both positions.

I think that anyone who is long paper and short gold is simply insane.
