It takes a long time, a lot of hard work, and some humility to develop a good set of critical thinking skills.

It also takes a certain amount of leisure which is in short supply in most working families.

And I think it somewhat takes a lifetime of varied experiences to ultimately have confidence in your own judgement of things. Until that time, most of us defer to people in authority...our teachers, our parents, neighbors, employers, etc. to a great extent.

But alot of it simply boils down to what each of us read. I don't read what my right-wing friends read, or if I do, I read it in conjunction with other things.

The hard part, for me at least, is to end up holding seemingly contradictory positions on some things. Like to lead a religious life or 'be' religious while also seeing the possible fraud of it.
