One of the most important considerations when flying single engines in the mountains is to very quickly determine wind direction. Then you fly the side of a valley where the wind is hitting the mountain and turning UP. This gives you additional lift. The other advantage of flying the valley side is IF you see ahead that you don't have the altitude to clear the next ridge, you can simply turn away from the mountain and circle back for another attempt... or simply forget it until you're in more airplane.
