Yes some people pick up an idea about "earthly things" and then keep it as a matter of faith.

I would draw a distinction between an ideological belief and an idea about facts based on faith. The distinction is not a chasm, ideology informs and effects this "faith", and its possible for the faith to impact the ideology as well.

But "faith" in this context would mean believing certain real world facts without evidence (or at the very least without solid or sufficient evidence), while ideology would be more about abstract ideas.

I'll use my side of the issue, so as not to bee seen using these distinctions to attack other people's ideas.

Being against single payer because you don't think larger government is a good idea on principle would be ideology.

Being 100% certain that there is no way single payer would constrain costs, and holding that opinion no matter what new evidence comes in would be faith

Being skeptical about the claims that single payer would reduce cost significantly without reducing quality in some way, would be neither.

"Seems to me that simple faith is a common basis of beliefs in global warming "

Faith?? You think the global warming concern has something to do with faith and not science?
