Anyway John it has been an interesting conversation.

Another way to look at the problem.. Why can't sailboats sail straight into the wind, instead of at an angle? (roughly no closer than 30 degrees).

I had someone many years ago tell me to put a wind generator onboard and then the sails could be replaced and just drive the boat straight forward.

After a very long discussion of why it wouldn't work he gave up.

(One of my majors in college was physics, my favorite subject!)

Can't win every argument... but sometimes, much later, you turn out to be right.

I don't think the rest of us knew we were in a contest with you. We spent some time trying to explain why your thinking was fallacious. Clearly each of us failed. Maybe that's some kind of victory for you?
