Hi Mindmelt. I'm with you. I have nothing against libertarians. (Some of my best friend are libertarians - LOL.) I also like some of their policies, such as cutting back on military spending. My point is simply that John McCain is not a libertarian. John McCain wants to expand the role of the military. If one wants to expand the mission of the military, the worst way to do it, is to do it on the cheap. Rumsfeld tried that in Iraq and How did that work out? Libertarians want to cut back our foreign military involvement, as did George Washington. This hardly describes John McCain. Libertarians abhor the loss of our liberties during the past seven years, in such activities as warrantless wiretaps and the many provisions of the Patriot Act. John McCain supports the Patriot Act. On the most contentious social issue of the day, John McCain is hardly a libertarian. The platform of the libertarian party states: "Recognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith views on both sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration." On this issue, John McCain is hardly a libertarian and, for that matter, neither is Ron Paul. My point is not to disparage the libertarian principles, many of which I am comfortable supporting. It is simply that John McCain is hardly a libertarian.
