Sign of recession: Splurging on Makeup

It's no surprise women like to spend a little extra money on cosmetics ...but the surprising thing is while people are cutting down on other costs during uncertain economic times, they are splurging on makeup.
"Makeup is an affordable luxury for women but it's also a great pick me up."
While it doesn't necessarily have to cost a pretty penny, this little magic product is the people's choice during rough times.
"It is discretionary spending that does not feel like discretionary spending."
Spending in the us is on a decline as consumers see a hike on gas and food prices ...but there is one thing that has seen an increase in sales...makeup.
A 4 percent increase that is.
" I think when things get a little dicey it's nice to treat yourself."
"They may not buy the dress, they may not buy the shoes, they might not buy either, but they're going to buy new mascara."
In the 1990 recession, makeup sales were up 10 percent and in the last recession of 2001, makeup flew off the shelves with a 23 percent increase.
Who says a little lipstick can't help get you through a big recession.
