Conservative Environmentalism

David Frum @ NRO

I suggest in Comeback that the environmental issue may be ripe for claiming by conservatives. This interesting article in the current New Yorker offers (unintended) support for that view. It describes practical attempts by corporations and others to limit carbon emissions - and the furious dislike of many organized environmental groups and advocates for such practical attempts.

The reason? These attempts use the profit motive - and put much of the onus on non-Western countries, whose deforestations do more harm than fleets of SUVs. The organized environmental hate the profit motive and hate the West even more than they dread environmental catastrophe. That's their prerogative of course. But it's highly unlikely that voters will feel the same way.
