The plantation culture, based on free human labor, was the real cause of the US Civil War. The American South was forced to develop a more diversified economy once slavery was outlawed. Besides, it was only a matter of time..the entire civilized Western world was banning that ancient custom during the late 1800s. Ironically, Africa continued to use and sell their native population as slaves long after the US Civil War.
