Just look at the IRS tables to see what income level pays what percentage of the total Federal Income Taxes.

But I keep asking uncomfortable questions like:

Who paid Barak and Michelle Obama's Ivy League University costs? Last time I looked, the tuition costs alone for the Ivy's is $39,000-46,000 per YEAR....plus living costs, and books, supplies, food, etc etc.....Even the State schools are $5,000-$15,000 per year, plus plus plus....

And those costs have to be paid for by money that is left from AFTER TAX income.

Now, if you are fortunate to get the college costs paid for you in someway.....then of course, you have no sympathy at all for struggling families ....you know, those families who might make $100,000-$150,000 BEFORE taxes with one to four kids, and those kids have the ability and desire to go to college. However, no scholarships because
a) the family is making too much money,
b) the family aren't refugees,
c) good students but not 4.0.

And that's just one example of "for instance"....

I think EVERYONE in this country should have to pay some Federal Tax, even those on public assistance, even if it's only $1 from every Federal check they receive.

Originally, I would have agreed with you. However, state and local governments have driven up local property and other taxes to such an extent and medical insurance premiums have risen so much its difficult to imagin living on 50k a year anymore in anywhere but a rural location. jdn

"it would be easy to live on $50000 a yr."

Possible. Since I have no intention of retiring I may not know.
