Old story?? Nothing old about even the initial story, let alone the response to the later ABC blog post.

And your response gives far too much credibility to the Pentagon

One link to a story that says the Pentagon doubts the claims, isn't exactly giving the Pentagon a ton of credibility.

and the Weekly Standard.

You might think the Weekly Standard isn't credible enough as an authority for factual information, but my post doesn't really use them that way. I'm not presenting them as an authority who you should defer to or accept data from, I am rather presenting the arguments one of their writers made. The validity of an argument doesn't depend on the person who made it.

OTOH the ABC blog post is reporting claimed facts, so credibility is important (and someone suspect), in fact massively important, because it doesn't name the captain, or give a full statement from him or any other collaborating evidence. It just takes a few quotes, that if accepted as true don't really confirm the story, and then says the story is confirmed.

This is the same Pentagon that brought us the Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman narratives.

If they said the sky is blue, I'd have to go check.
