They are shells of what they used to be, because many workers don't consider them beneficial.

The UAW is a good example of a union that gave itself a near mortal wound. Workers won't do well in the long run if they companies they work for become uncompetitive partially do to an expensive and inflexible union workforce.

And in any case "a shell" does not mean "non-violent"
