I get a choice once a year....among Medicare plans.... Before Medicare I had an annual choice of a few private plans.....

You had a once a year choice for plans through your employer. You could change more often than that if you wanted to pick up the bill yourself.

Also you don't have a choice of Medicare plans for Part A and Part B, the choice is simply Medicare. Only Part C and Part D give you choices of plans.

In any case I was comparing private insurance to the NHS. As far as I can tell there is no choice of plans there.
