he switched from dem to rep to run for mayor. He inherited the rudy mantle that way and ran as a fusion candidate as republican and in ny in liberal party. He may even have run on conservative party line as well..

I know he switched to being an Independent. So why the switch from Dem-Repub-Ind. He thinks he has a chance when he is demonstrating Ross Perot like approach?

Dem to GOP is clear. There are too few centrist Democrats in NYC to win primaries, while among Republicans in NYC, centrists predominate. Also, it is far easier to run in column 1 than in column 7 or 8.

As far as GOP to independent, I am not quite sure what the urgency was. It will look bad if he decides to run for governor of New York. He would have to do it again as a Republican.
