They were there for 37 years. To keep the peace between the Sunnis and the Shia, they had to have significantly more troops on the ground than we currently have. When they no longer could afford it, they had to leave.

The British had far more experience than we have in doing that sort of thing.


That invasion had nothing to do with oil either...

37 is a lot less than 100, and generally the circumstances where different. There is no way that we will be fighting a war there for 37 years either. As for being there for 37 years, that's possible, but if so it will be with lower force levels and much less combat.
