McCain over simplified the threat but I don't agree with your conclusions either.

"The only reason al Qaeda in Iraq exists, and has any basis for continuing to exist, is because of the U.S. occupation."

When ever I see you using the term the "only reason" or the "real reason" I put my ear plugs in because I know my crap detector is about to go hay wire. Al-Qaeda is currently a minor player in Iraq but still a serious concern because the Sunni population there has, for the most part, decided to make a go of supporting a national government. Al-Qaeda is in Iraq because Iraq represents an important and strategic opportunity for fundamentalist Sunnis to gain a strong foot hold in the world militarily and economically. The USA is in their way, but Al-Qaeda would definitely be there big time if we left. They are not there big time now only because we are there. You've got it backwards... as usual.

"There is no way, no prospect, no conceivable scenario, under which al Qaeda in Iraq could take over the country, or even carve out a regional base where they could operate freely, in the absence of U.S. forces."

Sure there is. Al-Qaeda for the time being has been hobbled in Iraq because the Sunni populations are convinced that the US and Iraqi combined forces have the upper hand. Without that assurance the Sunnis would live in deadly fear of Al-Qaeda and would join them rather than be tortured by them. It wouldn't be easy but the scenario exists.

"Not only would Iraqis never allow it,"

The Shi'ite militant/military power has become a significant concern for Al-Qaeda, mostly because of the Sadrists. But the National Army of Iraq is also becoming a well oiled machine, and with time and our support, it will be able to secure the hostile areas currently inhabited by Al-Qaeda and Al-Qaeda sympethizers.

" ... neither would Iraq's neighbors."

The Iranians and the Syrians would certainly get involved if Al-Qaeda began to pose a serious threat. The Saudis, Egyptians, Jordanians, the Turks and others would get involved to fight the Iranians and the Syrians ... And of course the rest of the world would not sit idly by watching the theatrics. Is that your dream for the Middle east?
