Actually, yes. I was under the impression that Britain had kept it as a colony.

However, it does look like they kept Iraq on a very short leash. And it looks like the invasion was more because the coup was attempting to eliminate British influence than an attempt to keep it out of German hands.

Wouldn't surprise me. The Nazis were seen as a way to break the colonialism in Northern Africa.
