Moderate would seem to imply no exuding of lunacy or hate, but being in some way in the center, doesn't mean you are moderate.

Or to put it another way more extreme versions of relatively mainstream ideologies aren't the only way to be extreme.

Well, I'm not certain whether this qualifies in your mind, but there are more than a few electoral stances which say to opponents that they are out of the mainstream and thus outside acceptable US politics and thus disenfranchised.
