Gold flashing and plating over various copper alloy bases is still by far the most popular and widely used material for connectors, sockets, plugs etc. for telephone, computer data and many audio uses. People have no idea that virtually every phone cord, battery contacts in cell phones and data cables that they use every day have gold plated contacts almost universally. This is because gold is not only a good conductor of electricity but it is corrosion free in normal environments and is superior in this respect to almost all other materials even in harsh environments.

That small amount of gold used in every contact in every phone cord in the world allows for clear voice and data transmissions that would never be possible with any other material at similar cost. Silver is a better conductor but it tarnishes after contact with the air and causes problems with low current applications. Copper also is a good conductor but it to corrodes and this causes the contact resistance to rise and unreliable connections result.
