read somewhere recently that Obama bristles at the "multi-racial" label
That seems odd in itself. What else could he be? I thought it was great that he was both white and black. It seemed somehow the perfect statement! Does he "renounce" his whiteness? :)

Speaking of his church-- it seems to be giving some of my evangelical friends pause. I went to the site to read about their mission. There's certainly no question about it being Afro-centric.
I think what was making them nervous was that the church states they are first and foremost
........... a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.

It's probably the same concern some have about the Jewish politician. Which is he first- an American or a Jew?

>>Not that I'm faulting him in any way. Only opining that he made more of a commitment than he had to, less than he might have.<<

Karen -

I still don't think that's right.

Tiger Woods may not have ever chosen a race, but he has consistently been referred to as "the first black to" do this or that in the press.

Barack refers to himself as African American. Given that his father was Kenyan and his mother a Kansan, that's a label that fits him perfectly. But given also that it's the latest fashionable term for black people, it's obvious that he's not trying to pass as white. So in that sense, I would agree with you that he has made a choice.

I just don't think he ever had any other realistic choice.

By the way, in my experience, people from the Caribbean view race differently than most Americans do. Back in New York I knew an older Cuban couple. She looked like what we think of as a Hispanic, and he looked black. Very dark skin, curly hair, etc. If anyone referred to him as black she would bristle and say, "He's not black. He's a Cuban of color." To her, American black people were to be looked down upon.
