I have been to Chickamaugua and not enjoyed it as much because it is not easy to envision the battle.

It was indeed a tough battle to envision, since it took place almost entirely in a dense forest. Perhaps the "best" spots are the cleared farmland around the Brotherton cabin where Longstreet exploited the Union gap, and Snodgrass Hill where Thomas earned his Rock of Chickamauga sobriquet.

One other Civil War site I recommend is Franklin, Tennessee.

Ever read "Company Aytch" by Sam Watkins? He describes the most horrific injuries and deaths as though he were talking about the weather, but he was absolutely speechless trying to convey the battle aftermath at Franklin.

A good friend administers the Carnton Mansion there.
