ARPANET is right. ARPA stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency. The original name of that agency was DARPA. The D is for Defense, and ARPANET's original name was the DARPA Internet.

Interestingly, since it is directly descended from ARPANET, the Internet we know today was made possible by government funded research and development.

I have a friend who first used the Defense Internet when there were a total of three nodes on it. That is, when three total computers were connected to it.
