There is the CRP plan which farmers are dropping out of now. That will hurt wildlife critters.

YOu Bet - big time.

CRP - conservation restoration program.

Intended to restore grasslands for the habitat of birds. It additionally pays a premium for riparian zones along almost all types of wetlands.

As a country we have tried to reduce much of the best farmland - becuse we've been so productive through efficiencies - it has caused surplusses and price declines.

With the increased demand for corn, ethonal has not only driven up prices it has increased the utilization of land for crops vs many of these dormant "environmental"/subsidy programs.

I for one think that farming should be encouraged. This is a wonderful export crop that gives the USA a resource like export and if at a higher price - I'll gladly pay it to the rest of the world pay us for what has to be one of the most underutilized resources we Americans have.

If the Saudi's build sovereign funds from selling a non renewable resource OIL - I very much like the idea of charging a higher price for our renewable crop exports.

Last but not least, the profits go to independent farmers using their cash and hard work.
This is a very efficient model and doesn't get wasteful like most government programs wether they be oil companies or sovereign funds.

This is a good evolutionary event .IMO

My bet is one of the best plays to make on this is buying American midwest farm land.
