I'm not a bit surprised. All the evolutionary pressure on the Jews of Europe was for them to develop their wits. Forced out of professions where they could use their hands because the guilds were closed to them, as was any profession requiring the owning of property, they were forced to live by their brains- and clearly they used those brains. I don't know how much emphasis to place on their religion, but it's extremely important that it involves so much study. Christians weren't studying their own Bible until much later- and when they finally DID start to read it, we got the American revolution because of that literacy. I don't know why some cultures embrace such positive ways of living (positive in terms of education), and others such negative ones. Clearly there is not one path in this world, but I wish more people embraced the educated path.
