The OPTI process is similarly very light on natural gas use. The forecast mentioned by Elmat is one of those "if the present continues" things which gives economics a bad name. It obviously won't happen that way.

To correct that assertion, Petrobank's THAI oil sands extraction technology does use some natural gas and water, as steaming is initially required to prepare for the ignition cycle, but only a fraction. (Sorry, I am on vacation so am not going to spend the team looking up the actual figures.)

Likewise, GHG emissions are only a fraction of conventional SAGD extraction.
